in the early afternoon, before the wind picked up, we collected the drops off the ground under the apple tree (and salvaged good apples), so we could determine any fresh drops from the storm (and turn them into applesauce).
that night, after the electricity went out, and the house was lit with candles:
making applesauce by candlelight
We were incredibly lucky. Our home is not tucked up tight with a brook or river. And we're in a relatively sheltered area against a small hill. The winds were high, and they howled through our old windows, but no damage was done. We cozied up with candles once the electricity went out, and listened to the wind, and watched the trees whip and dance while there was still the last traces of daylight. And when we woke in the morning, the sky was clear blue, the air was crisp, and the house was remarkably peaceful (particularly without any power). If it weren't for leaves and small branches strewn about the yard, you would have never known such force had come blowing through.
Wishes for strength for those who continue to recover from the result of the storm!
